She made every room feel like home.

Elena was a teacher, a gardener, and the steadiest hand in any room. She raised three children in a small mountain town, kept a thirty-year correspondence with her sister, and could quiet a crying baby simply by humming. She made every meal feel like a small celebration, and every stranger leave a friend. She is survived by her husband Tomás, her three children, seven grandchildren, and the dozens of students who still write to thank her.

A life

The shape of Elena’s years.

  1. 1947

    Born in the foothills

Elena was born in a small home above the river, the third of six children. Her mother always said she came into the world looking for someone to take care of.

  2. 1965

Left for the city to study

She was the first in her family to attend university, with a borrowed coat and a battered green suitcase. She studied literature and education.

  3. 1971

    Married Tomás

They met at a friend's wedding, danced once, and wrote letters for two years before he proposed under the same string of lights.

  4. 1979

Began teaching at Pine Ridge Elementary

Her first class had nineteen children. Three of them still send her cards. She taught second grade for thirty-one years.

  5. 1994

    Built the garden

Tomatoes, beans, sunflowers tall enough to bend over the fence. The grandchildren each had their own row.

  6. 2010

    Retired, kept teaching anyway

She tutored neighborhood children at the kitchen table and kept a jar of pencils sharpened by the door.

From 47 who knew her

Stories, kept together.

Mrs. Morales kept a tin of butterscotch candies in her desk and gave one to anyone who finished their reading. I still keep one in my pocket the morning of every parent-teacher conference. I became a teacher because of her.

When I was eight I broke a window and was terrified of telling her. She listened, hugged me, then handed me a broom. I spent the rest of the afternoon helping her sweep the kitchen and we never talked about the window again.

We wrote each other every week for thirty years. Her letters always smelled faintly of lavender. I still have every one of them in a box in the closet, tied with the same blue ribbon.

Elena brought soup to my wife when she was sick, every single Thursday for two years. We never asked her to. She just showed up.

Notes from visitors

A few quiet words.

  • Thinking of your whole family. She was a light in our neighborhood for as long as I can remember.

  • I sat next to Mrs. Morales at choir for fifteen years. She had a small notebook of song lyrics she copied by hand. I keep it on my piano now.

  • She loaned me her copy of One Hundred Years of Solitude in 1994 and never asked for it back. I still read it every spring.
