We built this because
grief deserved better.
Most memorial sites were built by people who needed to make a quarterly number. Their incentives drift toward selling flowers, candles, premium fonts, anniversary upsells, and ads for grief therapists. The grieving family is the product, not the customer.
When the founders of Flieder lost people they loved, they kept being asked — mid-tears — to upgrade a memorial subscription. To approve a sponsored florist. To consent to an obituary being copied to a network of scraper sites. None of it felt acceptable.
So we built the opposite.
Flieder is a memorial the family controls, end-to-end. No ads ever. No upsell modals inside a memorial. No defaults that benefit anyone but the family. The premium tier exists only to pay for storage and for a small team that cares about every line of code that touches a name we will not say wrong.
We are biased toward restraint — quieter typography, fewer features, slower animations — because memory does not need to be entertained. It needs to be held.
If we ever find ourselves about to add a button that makes the grief more profitable, we will not ship the button. That is the only product principle that matters.
